When does UK Clearing 2026 open?

UCAS Clearing opens fully from Thursday 14 August 2026, the day A-level results are released. Clearing places are actually published from early July for students without an offer, but the bulk of activity is on and immediately after results day.

How does this Clearing tool decide what courses I'd realistically get into?

You enter the A-level grades you have (or expect). The tool reads each course's published typical-offer tariff in UCAS points and groups results into three tiers — Within reach (within a grade either way), Worth calling (one to three grades above, because clearing usually drops the offer), and Comfortably below (you should clear with room to spare).

Is this an official UCAS service?

No. UniversityDB is independent — no university pays to be listed or ranked. We aggregate UCAS course data, OfS outcomes, HESA salary data, NSS scores and league tables in one place so you can compare clearing options side by side.

Can I see live clearing places?

Not yet — this tool matches every UK undergraduate course whose published typical offer fits your grades, and shows you the highest-rated by student satisfaction in each tier. On results day, ring the universities you're interested in to confirm a place. Their own clearing pages and the UCAS clearing search are the authoritative live sources.

How clearing actually works

What is clearing?

Clearing is how UK universities fill their remaining undergraduate places after results day. Around 70,000+ students use it every year — many because they didn't get the grades for their firm choice, but also because they did better than expected and want to trade up, or they decided late they wanted to go to university at all.

The "Within reach" tier

Courses whose typical published offer is within one grade of yours. These are the ones most likely to confirm if you call on results day. Most clearing offers are made within an hour of you ringing — have your UCAS personal ID, Track number and a written reason for choosing the course ready.

The "Worth calling" tier

Courses whose published offer is one to three grades above your grades. In clearing, universities frequently drop their published tariff because they have unfilled places to fill in 36 hours. Ring these — the published offer isn't necessarily what they'll take.

What this tool doesn't do (yet)

We don't show live clearing availability — only the published typical offer. On results day, ring the universities you're interested in or check their clearing pages and the UCAS clearing search to confirm a place is open.
