About this course

Tourism is a global phenomenon that according to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation will be the world’s largest industry in the 21st century. This is still the focus despite the current impact of the Covid-19 pandemic in that they predict tourism growth in the long term will achieve over 1.8 billion of international arrivals (UNWTO, Tourism Towards 2030).

Due to the impacts of the pandemic the course is designed in partnership with employers and industry associations to give you a solid theoretical and practical understanding of travel and tourism management enabling you to progress to higher level studies or directly into industry. The current crisis is an opportunity to rethink tourism for the future. Tourism is at a crossroads and the measures put in place today will shape the tourism of tomorrow. Governments and the industry need to consider the longer-term implications of the crisis, while capitalising on digitalisation, supporting the low carbon transition, and promoting the structural transformation needed to build a stronger, more sustainable, and resilient tourism economy (OECD, 2021).

You can be part of this future by studying as part of your course:

Gain an appreciation of other cultures and be aware and sensitive to the positive and negative impacts of tourism on communities and local economic development

Look at the modern challenges faced by tourism organisations, focusing on current and contemporary trends and developments so you are equipped with the skills to solve problems and implement plans and solutions to resolve them

Develop an entrepreneurial approach by working alongside key industry employers to build innovative solutions to real-life business challenges

Gain an insight into moral, ethical, and environmental issues allowing you to make a valuable contribution to the tourism and travel sector

Travel and tourism can offer up lots of interesting pathways due to its varying sub-industries related to travel. From conference, events and tour management to tourist information services, passenger transport to culture and heritage work, theme parks to national parks, you could find yourself working across the board of this diverse industry. Indeed, tourism is a global industry, so there is also an advantage in learning a second language, which could take you to many different countries and locations.

To help you develop employment opportunities you will receive free membership to the Institute of Travel and Tourism (ITT) for the duration of your degree. The ITT is a tourism trade association your student membership puts you on the road to becoming a professional Member - helping you to improve your career prospects.

Additional benefits include:

• Entitlement of using the post-nominal title - S. Inst.TT - after your name and on your CV • Expand your network at the complimentary (London and regional) Network ITT and Future You events • Boost your career prospects with the chance of winning one of the prestigious ITT Future You Awards, presented at the ITT Summer Party at the House of Commons
