About this course

As part of this course, you’ll: • Study language acquisition, systems and teaching methodology and apply it to your English Language Teaching (ELT) practice • Understand the role of language in issues relating to social justice, diversity and inclusion • Learn how to create inclusive language classrooms • Discover and experience a range of language learning technologies and ELT contexts • Develop your identity and communication skills as an ELT professional through classroom and reflective practice in a supportive personalised learning environment • Complete an independent research project relevant to your teaching practice and context

Learn in a global context The course covers a wide range of global teaching contexts, from young learners to older learners; dealing with students from different backgrounds and social groups.

Professional expertise Your modules will draw on the latest research from industry and from the teaching and assessment course team’s expertise. This course will be delivered in-line with the values embedded in CollectiveEd: The Centre for Coaching, Mentoring & Professional Learning. The Centre is located at our university and aims to expand the knowledge base on coaching, mentoring and collaborative professional development.”

Teaching and learning Assessments will be practice-based with the option to take synoptic assessments across modules to ease your workload. Your study will provide opportunities for personalised learning. You’ll gain expertise in at least two areas of ELT and you’ll have the opportunity to develop your teacher agency and identity.

This qualification will set you up for teaching in a wide range of countries, for example: • A master’s qualification in this subject is required in the Far East and Middle East • Vietnam has a five-year plan to increase its English language capacity • South America has an ongoing programme to develop bilingual teachers You will have the opportunity to become a part of the strong teaching and research networks we have with professional bodies for teachers of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).
