About this course

The BA (Hons) Practical Filmmaking is designed to teach aspiring filmmakers the essential skills, across a range of disciplines, to prepare them for a career in the screen industries. The degree focuses on the technical training for the pre-production, production and post production of a graduate film, and the theory and practice that underpins the skill sets of professional filmmakers.

Programme Overview

2-year programme intensive fast-track programme including summer terms

Small class sizes and specialist seminar groups

Taught by working industry professionals allowing students to receive training to industry standard from people who have up-to-date knowledge.

Specialist training on Arri 16mm camera from Panavision.

Learn about filmmaking from the perspective of the director, producer and writer and all key crew roles.

Focus on current issues through the impact of documentary filmmaking, supported by the Bertha Foundation and DocHouse.

Access to equipment and facilities outside of class time.

-Be trained in the use of a variety of professional post production softwares.

Progression: Depending on the specialisations followed during their studies, students may progress as Directors, Producers, Cinematographers, Editors, Production Designers, and Sound Designers. Students may also choose to study at postgraduate level in a specialised subject. Many graduates work as freelancers on independent productions whilst building their experience.

70% of Central Film School graduates go on to work and /or further study 15 months after the course.

Professional Perspectives

We organise a series of events throughout the year where screen professionals tell their stories. In these sessions, a Guest Speaker is invited into the school to speak about their career and experience in the industry.
