About this course

The course is an excellent opportunity to expand a career in creative media production. it covers a variety of visual communications, as you’ll further develop skills in film and TV production and theory. You’ll also investigate filmic texts, using the appropriate terminology and the language in relation to film and media through coursework assessed assignments.

All projects are simulated with the intention of replicating industry standards of practice. The Higher National in the course also provides a range of progression opportunities for students, including routes into employment and topping up their study to a full degree. You will be able to work practically in small groups or on their own to create:

  • Documentaries

  • Sound in Media

  • Short Films

  • Film Criticism

  • Video Essay

    You will take part in:

  • Training for a range of careers in the media sector and its support industries.

  • Opportunities to gain a nationally recognised qualification to enter employment in the media sector or progress to higher qualification in media production.

  • Develop a range of higher-level skills, techniques and attributes essential for successful performance in working life.

  • Transferable skills that will enable you to progress and move within the media sector.

  • Working with clients to produce a range of productions.

    Trips and Equipment

    There may be an opportunity to take part in a visit to Europe each year of the course. Past trips have included Disneyland Paris, Barcelona and Italy.

    Our higher education students will get the chance to use industry standard equipment including the use of our Black Magic Pocket 6K Camera.

    Work Experience

    Future Flames Productions is our in-house student production company which is unique to Walsall College. As part of the course, you will have an opportunity to produce videos or filming for other college courses or creating content for external clients like the NHS, the Council or small businesses. Here is a list of companies our students have worked with:

    - Co-Op Travel Students have been filming with Co-op in order to a virtual invitation to their conference.

    - Stunt Team Students have worked with a local stunt team which helped them understand the logistics of filming stunts.

    - NHS Students have filmed multiple moving images for the NHS, consisting of piece to camera for presentations, a demonstration at manor hospital of new equipment and a conference entitled ‘What Works: Reflecting back’.

    - Smile for Joel Students filmed the black tie ball for local charity Smile for Joel which raises money for families impacted by terrorism.

    - Unlock Performance Students have been working on multiple projects with local sports psychologist in which she interviews various athletes from footballers to body builders.

    - MA Fitness Students produced a trailer and interview for local gym brand
