About this course
Our Mountain Medicine, MSc/PGDip programme is dually accredited. As well as awarding the prestigious UIAA/ICAR/ISMM International Diploma in Mountain Medicine. This course is for registered healthcare practitioners interested in expedition, travel, remote, rescue and high-altitude medicine. You'll gain theoretical and practical knowledge to treat the illnesses and diseases that may occur in these settings.The programme combines practical skills and theory, both in medicine and mountaineering. You'll gain the skills and confidence needed to operate in mountain environments. Difficult terrain, high altitudes and harsh weather can quickly lead to life-threatening situations. As well as presenting unique challenges in locating and treating casualties and saving lives. Our teaching staff include some of the most eminent figures in high-altitude medicine, top mountain guides and others at the forefront of mountain rescue. The Postgraduate Diploma course takes place as four modules. Each module starts with preparation materials online in our virtual learning environment to develop your knowledge. This will prepare you to get the most out of the four highly practical lecture blocks. These are week-long blocks that blend together mountaineering and clinical skills development. The blocks are delivered in the following locations: Delivery is a combination of practical sessions in small groups. Much of this is on the mountainside, accompanied by lectures from subject experts and small group tutorials. This will be supported by online content including discussion forums, quizzes and pre-module reading.
