Why study Microbiology and Immunology at Keele?

  • Investigate some of the most exciting areas of current life sciences research

  • Gain research training in experimental design, practical techniques, and data analysis

  • Access to state-of-the-art facilities including our Central Science Laboratories and David Attenborough Laboratories

  • Benefit from a comprehensive programme of academic and professional development workshops to enhance your employability skills

  • Present the outcomes of your final year research project at our Undergraduate Student Research Conference in the context of a realistic research conference experience

Our employability-focused BSc will immerse you in the fundamental concepts of microbiology and immunology, offering a comprehensive exploration of contemporary biological sciences. Through an in-depth and dynamic programme, you'll delve into cutting-edge research areas, gaining profound insights into molecular biology, intricate biological mechanisms, and the complex relationships between hosts and pathogens.

During the programme you will gain a solid grounding in biology, biochemistry and physiology of viruses and microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, and parasites, together with the role of the immune system in defending the body against infection from pathogens. Our overarching aim is to equip you with the multidisciplinary skills and knowledge employed by scientists in these fields.

In microbiology there is a particular emphasis on host-pathogen interactions, the diseases these can cause, the development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, as well as their wider application in biotechnology and their critical roles in global ecosystems, including interactions within key plant and animal hosts.

Immunology explores the enormous diversity of the human immune system, and how such knowledge is essential in the development of new biotechnological approaches to disease treatment and prevention, such as vaccines.
