About this course

Course Overview

This foundation year builds on your mathematical skills, preparing you for entry onto the BSc (Hons) Mathematics degree.

A course with a foundation year is ideal if you’ve got the ability to study for a degree, but don’t have the necessary formal qualifications to directly join an honours programme. It’s a great stepping stone to a full degree.

Early on in the course you’ll attend a residential team building activity, so you’ll get to know staff and students, and develop friendships that’ll last throughout your studies.

The syllabus covers a range of mathematical topics, including the applications of mathematics in physics and engineering.

At the end of your foundation year, and with good grades, you can progress onto the mathematics degree, or onto a degree in physics, astrophysics, or engineering.

Why study with us

  • Throughout your degree you’ll expand your knowledge of the three strands of mathematics – pure, applied and statistics –and have the chance to explore specialist areas such as cryptology, fluid dynamics and mathematical biology.

  • Our friendly lecturers are always available to help support you. They'll make sure you're ready to start the degree of your choice.

  • There are opportunities to go on international field trips which have an educational purpose. Previous students have been as far afield as Benin in West Africa.

    What you'll do

  • You’ll study Foundation Maths modules and follow this up with either three physics or three computing modules.

  • You’ll develop important transferable skills such as teamwork and communication - important to employers, and useful in your studies.

  • Other key workplace skills you’ll acquire include analytical, investigative, problem-solving and self-management.

    Accreditations

  • This course is accredited by the IMA, the UK's learned and professional society for mathematics and its applications. The IMA award the Chartered Mathematician designation, which can be gained following further training and professional experience.
