• To develop in all students rigorous, logical, deductive reasoning; • To give students a solid foundation in the fundamental ideas of pure mathematics, calculus, probability, mathematical methods, statistical inference and modern applied mathematics and statistics; • To enable students to use appropriate methods to solve problems and to prove results; • To give students the opportunity to develop practical skills in the analysis and modelling of data; • To prepare students for a wide range of future careers through the acquisition of specific skills and general mathematical and statistical ability; • To enable students to enhance their transferable and inter-personal skills, particularly in computer applications and programming, written communication, and problem solving to prepare students for employment in a wide variety of contexts where skills in the mathematical sciences are valued or for further study and for engagement in lifelong learning; • To prepare students for research-based activity involving mathematics or statistics.
