About this course
Studying mathematics at Cardiff you’ll develop your knowledge, understanding and skills in the main areas of mathematics. This three-year course provides a broad background in applied mathematics, statistics, computing and operational research. You’ll explore abstract mathematical concepts, logical argument and deductive reasoning, and study the different ways mathematics can be applied to develop problem-solving skills.
As you move through the course, you will gain academic independence, moving from small group teaching in your first year through to an optional independent project in your final year.
In most cases, you're free to switch between our different mathematics degrees at the end of year one if your interests change. You will also have the opportunity to complete a professional placement year or a year abroad. You don’t need to commit to either of these options until the start of the second year, so there’s plenty of time to decide.
During the summer months, you’ll have the opportunity to complete paid work as a mathematician or statistician where you can gain valuable work experience and develop your professional skills. Our dedicated placements team can help you find a summer placement and provide support during your time there.
