About this course

Dive into the real-world applications of mathematics with our IMA accredited ‘Mathematics  (Applied Mathematics)’ programme. Combine a solid grounding in core mathematics concepts with a focus on developing your problem-solving and mathematical modelling skills to make an impact. With dedicated professional development and employability modules, and the opportunity to spend time in industry, we’ll support you to develop the practical, technical and logical reasoning skills sought by employers.

Why choose this course?

  • Accredited by the Institute of Mathematics & its Applications

  • Top 15 in UK for Mathematics (Guardian League Table, 2024)

  • Mathematics at Keele is Top 10 in the UK for student positivity* NSS 2024 (Broad-based universities) *based on overall student satisfaction, which is an average score across 27 questions asked in the NSS

  • Focus on modelling real-world scenarios and unstructured problem solving

  • Be career-ready by gaining transferrable, professional and employability skills

Our Mathematics (Applied Mathematics) degree integrates a thorough study of the three core disciplines—pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and statistics—with specialist final-year topics in applied mathematics. The programme also prioritises the development of problem-solving, logical reasoning, practical, and employability skills that are highly valued by employers.

During your first year, you will build a strong foundation in mathematical thinking with modules in algebra, calculus, and differential equations, whilst developing your skills in data analysis using the statistical software R. You will also begin to develop key employability skills by working in teams on group projects, solving problems and communicating your findings in visual ways.

Throughout the programme you’ll apply your learning to real-world theories or experiences, providing context to your learning and strengthening your understanding. You’ll also have the chance to align your studies to your passions by choosing from a variety of optional modules.

In year two, you will strengthen your knowledge in pure and applied mathematics, probability and statistics, whilst expanding your skillset by learning the programming language Python. Focusing on your employability skills, you will have the opportunity to spend time in industry with both full time and modular placement opportunities. You will also build on your professional and transferable skills with extended problem work, report writing, effective communication of mathematical results, and collaboration with others.

In your final year you will study several specialised modules related to applied mathematics including Fluid Mechanics, Waves and Mathematical Modelling. You may also choose to work on a final year research project, applying theoretical knowledge and problem-solving skills to a technical, software, research or business problem. Your research project is an excellent opportunity for you to draw together skills in experimental study design, critical interpretation of data, presentation and project management.
