Mathematics has been taught at Aberystwyth since 1872, so that the department builds on over 140 years of teaching excellence, employing lecturers who are committed teachers and internationally-recognised researchers. This degree is accredited by the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications(IMA), the UK's learned and professional society for mathematics, recognising you as a Chartered Mathematician.
As a student in Aberystwyth, you will be taught the essential disciplines of algebra, calculus and mathematical analysis. As your interests develop, you may select further classes from a broad range of topics in mathematics and statistics. These may include analysis, partial differential equations, abstract and linear algebra, statistical modelling and mechanics. In your final year, you will undertake short research projects with a member of staff as well as choosing from our list of optional modules. We aim to create a friendly, open and welcoming environment in which students can reach their full mathematical potential. This degree is delivered through lectures, tutorials and practicals. You will be assessed through a combination of coursework, presentations, reports and examinations. You will be assigned a personal tutor throughout your degree course, who will help you with any problems or queries, whether these are academic-related or personal issues. This course will develop your understanding of a wide range of theories and processes in Mathematics. You will develop your written and oral communication skills and your ability to work independently and as part of a group. Some of the skills you will develop include research, data analysis, enhanced mathematical and computational skills, problem-solving, creative thinking, information technology, independent working, time management, organisation, meeting deadlines and self-motivation. You will enhance your ability to express ideas, communicate information clearly and concisely, accommodate other viewpoints and come to a decision as part of a team. This degree scheme is designed to cultivate transferable skills, including numeracy and reasoning, to ensure that our graduates are attractive to employers in a wide range of fields.
This Mathematics degree will be particularly valuable in employment situations that require specialist numerical skills and logical and analytical thought.
