Maritime Science

University of Plymouth
Postgraduate MSc (PG) Full-time 1 Year Environmental and earth sciences

About this course

This programme combines study from broad areas that form the desired professional skillset to support professionals transferring from different disciplines into the Maritime industry. It is designed to build upon of the knowledge base that the University of Plymouth currently possesses across different Schools. The programme is a one year MSc course presenting a core set of subjects that will level the cohort’s knowledge followed by specialized subject paths that the candidate will chose from three different disciplines: technical, operational, and regulatory. The programme will be composed by modules of 20 credits and a Project Module of 60 credits. Core modules in the first semester level the cohort knowledge on the subject, while the second semester holds the specialized modules. The programme is designed to maximize the transfer of knowledge between peers, facilitated by the participation, and contribution, of the cohort during the learning process. This will be achieved by leveraging group work based on case studies designed around the subject in the syllabus. An integrating core module —Maritime Operations— will drive the group case studies and will function as transfer for the skills from the different disciplines (this will also add flexibility on the content of new modules, since this core module can bridge the gaps in the knowledge). For example, individuals from the technical, operational, and regulatory disciplines will work together and will have to provide solutions to real world problems that have been introduced through a case study, e.g. to prepare a high-level service design for surveying remotely a pipeline. The programme is built to meet industry needs and government forecasts for the Maritime industry as well as to providing a gateway to professionals hoping to position their careers into this industry. Links with industry will be reinforced with the inclusion of external guest speakers from industry and field trips included in the timetable.

The programme targets individuals —domestic and international— from different disciplines, preferably with some professional experience, that are looking into opportunities within the Maritime Industry. For instance, these may be represented by a seafarer wishing to start a career ashore, or by an engineer —software, control, electrical and electronic, etc.—, hydrographer, manager, etc. looking to transfer their skills to a different industry with strong growing prospects and offering excellent opportunities.
