Low Carbon Architectural Engineering

University of Plymouth
Postgraduate MSc Full-time 1 Year Civil engineering

About this course

The MSc Low Carbon Architectural Engineering programme aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to address one the greatest current policy concerns regarding the built environment: the amount of energy embodied within the new and refurbished building stock alongside the performance gap between design and operation. The masters will allow students to measure, analyse and assess the material specification of building materials and components alongside the operational building performance. This knowledge and associated skills are relatable to building services engineers, architects, contractors, client bodies, users who have an influence on the design, construction, and facilities management outcomes. This programme will address a primary requirement to address the questions and policy concerns raised by a number of UK government and UN policy statements and commitments such as the “Sustainability in the Built Environment” inquiry and the UN’s Sustainable Cities and Communities Goal. The hands-on approach of the masters aims to provide ample opportunities for the students to measure, and undertake laboratory and in-situ measurements in the new CobBauge ‘living lab’ building showcasing the university’s international research on ultra-low carbon buildings. The learning from the programme can also be fed back to design teams to both diagnose issues with any current designs but also to help ensure that lessons are learnt, and future designs improved.
