About this course
Why Study This Course at Middlesex? At Middlesex, we offer a supportive and inspiring environment to help you achieve your potential. The foundation year is designed to provide a smooth transition into undergraduate study, building your creative confidence and practical skills. You will be taught by expert academics, including Jon Mortimer, a professional interior designer with over 20 years of experience across hospitality, retail, residential, and exhibition design, including projects such as the design of a private island in the Caribbean.
Our north London campus offers access to excellent facilities, workshops, and studios where you will develop your skills using both traditional and modern tools. In addition, you will benefit from Middlesex’s proximity to central London, a global hub for design and architecture. The capital’s rich heritage, iconic interiors, and cultural landmarks will provide valuable inspiration throughout your studies.
For those seeking further industry experience, the full Interior Design BA offers a one-year professional placement as part of a four-year programme. This opportunity allows you to gain hands-on experience and earn an Advanced Diploma in Professional Practice: Interior Design, a highly regarded qualification that enhances employability.
What You Will Gain The foundation year will prepare you with the essential skills needed to succeed in interior design. You will gain knowledge of design communication, including sketching, model-making, digital tools, and visualisation techniques, enabling you to explore and present your creative ideas effectively. You will also develop key skills in research, critical thinking, and design development, ensuring you have a strong academic and practical foundation for degree-level study.
Upon successful completion of the foundation year, you will progress onto the Interior Design BA, where you will explore the design of commercial, cultural, and residential interiors. You will work on real-world projects across sectors such as retail, hospitality, workplace, and exhibition environments, developing an understanding of spatial design, sustainability, and the role of interior design in meeting client and community needs.
Graduates will emerge with a professional portfolio showcasing their creative and technical abilities, preparing them for careers in interior design studios, architectural practices, and specialist firms. Middlesex alumni have gone on to work for renowned companies such as Brinkworth, Dalziel and Pow, Virgile and Partners, Silver and Co., and Fitch, demonstrating the strong career prospects this course offers.
By combining foundational preparation with degree-level study, this programme equips you with the skills, knowledge, and industry experience to thrive as a creative and forward-thinking interior design professional.
