Global Black Studies, Decolonisation & Social Justice

On our MA Global Black Studies course, we will situate Black studies, culture, and identity in a global context. The master’s degree aims to unite global perspectives, through course modules you will investigate the underlying historical, cultural, and contemporary patterns of social change. We will look at social change in broad terms but also through specific case studies.

Throughout your studies you will have the chance to learn more about particular social groups and their interventions and contributions in global regions and local communities, such as:

- the legacy of African Chattel Enslavement

- the African and Caribbean diaspora

- the rise of indentured workers.

- the Windrush generations

- black social activism.

The MA degree will also consider contemporary debates such as:

- Black Lives Matter (BLM)

- issues in education

- white privilege

- policing

- the social justice system.

The course will also engage with a range of positive contributions made by the black diaspora in literature, music, film, theatre and the arts, science, business, grassroots activism, and campaigns for social justice.

Diversity, difference, and social justice are the core themes being examined on this course. These components are embedded throughout the modules and are designed to allow exploration of global and ethical issues, together with an appreciation of cultural diversity and an awareness of human rights.

You will learn through real-life scenarios and teaching practices that allow for dynamic feedback whilst developing the ability to think critically and logically.

The course will explore personal narratives and histories, marginalised thinkers and activists and the reinterpretation of accepted discourses of ‘race’.

You will have the ability to work well individually as well as part of a team, both during classes and practice-based sessions. These requirements foster skills such as:

- decision-making

- working to briefs

- time-management skills

- showing initiative

- working collaboratively

- displaying good communication and interpersonal skills.

The MA Global Black Studies will draw upon the expertise of an array of staff from across the university as well as internationally renowned experts.
