The Department of Modern Languages is an interdisciplinary hub of research and we welcome research proposals that go beyond subject boundaries. You can be jointly supervised by an academic specialising in French studies and another from a different discipline, depending on your research interests.
Research a range of cultural, literary, historical, and socio-political topics related to periods from the Middle Ages to the present day. We're home to one of the UK's largest academic communities of researchers exploring the European national cultures. Conduct your PhD research from anywhere in the world through our online distance learning option.
