About this course

Forensic biology is the application of biology to link a person(s), such as suspect or victim, to a location, an item or another person. It can be utilised to further investigations for both criminal and civil cases. Two of the most important factors to be constantly considered throughout the collection, processing, and analysis of evidence, are the maintenance of chain of custody as well as contamination prevention, especially considering the nature of the majority of biological evidence.
This MSc is highly practical by its very nature. There is a focus on the interpretational skills required to critically evaluate different forms of forensic evidence recovered from exhibits in the laboratory and at the crime scene, based on scenarios.
With particular focus on biological evidence types, such as DNA, blood and other body fluids, the MSc focuses on the decision making and practitioner opinion of the scientific evidence based on real life case scenarios.
You will have the opportunity to learn skills which are key to the role of the forensic practitioner, such as court room skills and gain knowledge from experienced practitioners that contribute to the teaching on the modules within the MSc. There is also an emphasis on strong and effective communication and expression of opinion through scientific reports, instructions, and discussion with colleagues.
Forensic Biology MSc sits within the Cranfield Forensic Institute at Cranfield campus.
The course provides numerous opportunities to gain practical skills both in the laboratory and at the onsite crime scene facilities. There is also a distinct focus on the interpretational and critical thinking skills required by a forensic practitioner in industry. This course will also provide numerous opportunities to gain skills which would be advantageous in a range of laboratory-based careers and other careers in the criminal justice system.
Most modules are delivered over a five-day period, interspersed with time devoted to private study. You will be required to take 8 core modules, which include modules on the forensic context of body fluids, bloodstain pattern analysis and DNA as well as courtroom skills.
You will also have a choice of 13 elective modules which can be based on your particular background, future requirements or interests.
This is followed by a four-month research project and either a thesis or paper. Within the research project, you will get the opportunity to gain essential experience from use of a range of analytical equipment and will be assigned a relevant supervisor with industry experience best suited to your topic of interest to support your process.
