About this course

The shift to digital media has created profound changes in the ways we understand the world around us. This degree will ask you to think about the ways in which digital cultures have changed the way we live and work, how we relate to the environment and to each other, how digital platforms have transformed how audiences now produce and consume film, television, and other media.

We are ranked 11th in the UK for Communication and Media Studies*

This programme offers you the chance to become a knowledgeable and independent student of screen media and their related industries. You'll learn about:

  • film, TV and digital media across different social, historical and cultural contexts, and from significant theoretical perspectives

  • how digital media have affected our relationship with the environment and each other

  • how digital platforms have transformed the way audiences produce and consume film, TV and other media

  • how the screen industries work through practical and creative tasks such as video essays and visualising data

You'll be part of a thriving student film culture, including a student film society and TV channel, and have the chance to show your own work as part of the annual Southampton Student Film Festival.

You will have the opportunity to study abroad for either a semester or a full year with one of our partner institutions worldwide as part of this programme.

Students who choose to spend a semester abroad will continue their Part 2 curriculum at the partner university. Part 3 of the programme will then be completed at Southampton.
