About this course

Immerse yourself in the study of film from a variety of perspectives: as popular art or political tool, as big business, and as cultural and historical artefact. You’ll study familiar classics alongside contemporary cinema, with genres including film noir, horror, science fiction, documentary and animation.

From the earliest projected images to the present day, you’ll learn to view films with a critical eye. A year abroad will enhance your understanding of visual arts and let you experience a new culture.

We are ranked 11th in the UK for Communication and Media Studies*

You'll spend your third year studying at one of our partner universities abroad. Your options include: South Korea, Sweden, Ireland or the Czech Republic – countries with their own distinctive film cultures. You can take lectures in English but may also improve your languages. We'll help you plan your year abroad to suit your interests.

Our digital humanities facilities will allow you to study and research through cutting-edge technology, such as virtual reality, 3D scanners and printers, and a 360 degree fully immersive audio-visual centre.
