Develop your passion for film while exploring German language, history and culture in depth.

Our Film and German degree allows you to pursue an understanding of film within the context of a wider knowledge of Germanic language and culture. No prior knowledge of German is needed.

Film Studies fosters an understanding of visual aesthetics and leads students into areas of study as diverse as history, politics, philosophy, technology and performance. You’ll study the history and theory of cinema across a broad range of modules and have the opportunity to write your own film script.

Studying German at Queen Mary involves intensive engagement with the language, in conjunction with learning about the cultures and histories of Germany, Austria and Switzerland. You’ll develop a high level of linguistic competence, together with analytical skills and an understanding of intercultural issues.

You’ll spend your third year studying or working in Germany, Austria or German-speaking Switzerland, an exceptional opportunity to develop your language skills through immersion and boost your intercultural competence.
