About this course

This award is aimed at those individuals who wish to develop their interest in the equine with a robust grounding in scientific principles pertaining to the day-to-day management of horses. The equine is a complex creature, with supporting needs that address the way in which the animal is managed to maximise health, welfare and discipline-specific performance, when required, in a range of very diverse environments.

This programme aims to provide you with a thorough understanding of management requirements, covering health, first aid, nutrition, stable management, tack fit and farriery as well as anatomy and physiology. Developing a scientific understanding, combined with the ability to apply that knowledge practically, will enable you to take a proactive role in the industry following graduation. ARU Writtle's approach of ‘science into practice’ is very evident throughout this programme.

If you study the Cert HE initially, you'll take five core modules then follow one of five pathways. Each pathway includes 2-3 optional modules, and is a route into one of our five BSc (Hons) equine degrees. These degrees are:

  • Equine Behavioural Science

  • Equine Bioveterinary Science

  • Equine Performance Science

  • Equine Performance and Business Management
