About this course
English at NTU is taught by expert academics and award-winning writers. You’ll be able to study an exciting array of literature dating from the Renaissance period right through to the 21st Century. You'll examine a range of literature such as; Shakespeare, American literature, Black writing in Britain, travel writing and modern poetry. Through the varied modules you’ll explore key debates, enhance your communication skills and become more creative in the way that you write. You’ll be able to engage with a detailed cultural programme of events where you’ll be able to meet and converse with writers, film makers and other practitioners to gain a greater insight into English and to learn additional expertise. You’ll also be given fantastic research seminars which will help you to conduct your own research.
History offers a range of ways to make sense of the past by utilising a selection of approaches and skills. The academic team at NTU teaches specialist modules informed by their own research specialisms, including; History Matters, Conflicts and Cultures in Mid-Victorian England 1850-1880 and Real Life Work Project. This course requires you to be passionate, focused and to use digital technology to undertake independent study and library research. The History department have a close network of companies and over 250 museums across the East Midlands to help provide you with exciting placement opportunities to help you build your CV and to make your own connections within the industry.
Our English degree will strengthen your professional and creative writing. You'll develop excellent verbal and written communication, will be able to think critically and be able to contextualise theoretical approaches to the study of English. History will provide you with a diverse skill range such as; conceptual analysis, be able to project manage effectively and be able to take an initiative and work well within a team and independently. 92% of our BA (Hons) English and History undergraduates are in work or further study within just six months of finishing their degree (DLHE 2016/17). Many of our recent graduates have gone on to work in a variety of exciting roles such as policy advisers and recruitment consultants. Others have pursued careers in journalism, public relations and publishing.
