About this course

Your study will cover theoretical and practical aspects across the range of electrical and electronic engineering. Core topics include power systems, power electronics, digital electronics, circuits and devices, electrical machines and drives. In addition to the individual project in the third year, you will work on a more research based group project in your fourth year.

The electrical and electronic engineering discipline ranges from the design and fabrication of individual components, such as semiconductor chips, electric motors and radio antennae, to complete systems, such as mobile phones and electric vehicles.

Informed by our world-leading research and designed in collaboration with our industry partners, this course gives you a flying start to your career.

You’ll learn by a combination of lectures, laboratory classes, tutorials and projects. Many of which will be delivered in our modern engineering teaching building, The Diamond. In particular, you'll learn to use the industry-standard equipment in our Electronics and Control Lab, Teaching Cleanroom and Computer Labs.

In year one we’ll review the basic physics behind electrical or electronic devices, and you'll learn how to design, build and test simple electronic systems. These classes will be supplemented by an introduction to computer programming, a necessary skill for all engineers.

Year two contains in-depth learning relating to energy generation, embedded programming, electronic circuits and devices and data communications. You’ll do three projects:

  • A week-long faculty-wide engineering challenge

  • An industrial project with one of our industrial partners

  • A design project in which you will design, build and test an electrical or electronic component.

    The design project gives you an opportunity to tailor your study to your particular areas of interest. In year three you can further tailor your study by selecting modules from a particular stream (electrical; electronics; communications; semiconductors) or continue with a broad spectrum of modules. You’ll also take a management module and complete a large individual research project, supervised by one of our academic staff.

    Year four contains specialist modules as well as a large group project, where you'll develop a complete electrical/electronic system. Recent examples include an automated golf-cart; plant-growth chamber and helium balloon launch and retrieval system.

    Accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng).
