EEG in Practice

Aston University, Birmingham
Postgraduate Short Course Certificate Distance learning 20 Weeks

About this course

Studied via distance learning, this standalone module provides a comprehensive understanding of electroencephalography (EEG) in clinical practice. It focuses on the role of EEG in managing unconscious, critically ill patients and children with epileptic disorders, as well as the theory behind sleep physiology and its disorders.

This module covers the pathophysiology and management of patients with encephalopathy or coma, the use of continuous EEG monitoring in intensive care, and clinical neurophysiology assessments. It also addresses paediatric epilepsies, video telemetry and ambulatory EEG, and the neurobiology of sleep and sleep disorders. Students will gain practical insights into assessing and managing sleep disorders and epilepsy in both adult and paediatric settings.

On successful completion of this module you will be able to:

  • Critically appraise the management of the unconscious patient in the intensive care unit and the clinical uses of continuous EEG monitoring in critically ill patients.

  • Demonstrate the ability to critically appraise the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and electroencephalographic findings in paediatric epileptic syndromes and paediatric metabolic manifestations in the central nervous system.

  • Apply an integrative understanding of normal and abnormal sleep and its assessment in patients with sleep disorders and in the epilepsy clinic.

  • Demonstrate a critical evaluation of the clinical applications of ambulatory recordings and video-telemetry in adult and childhood seizure disorders.
