About this course

This course is designed to enhance your knowledge about aspects of teaching and learning. It is suitable for teachers working in primary, secondary and post compulsory settings and allows you to:

  • Develop your skills and knowledge for professional growth

  • Link your learning to your professional practice

  • Enjoy a mix of independent study and discussion

Education at Winchester is grounded in research-based teaching - you construct practical theories of the situations which confront you in your professional life and test them in action. The programme is suitable for teachers working in primary, secondary and post-compulsory settings.

You build up credits by undertaking a range of optional modules, allowing you to focus on issues relevant to your own practice. Many of the pathways through the MA enable you to explore an element of your subject knowledge or pedagogy, such as your classroom practice, school leadership role or an aspect of your school improvement, as part of your MA research.

The modules are flexible, allowing you to submit assignments of between 4,000 and 8,000 words. These enable you to identify and develop an aspect of your professional work with a tutor’s support.

The majority of our students opt for our Independent Work-based Research route (IWBR), which enables our students to focus on an aspect of teaching, learning or educational leadership which is specifically relevant to their work in their own setting. However, there are a range of pathways through the MA, enabling you to specialise. These include: Primary Maths Mastery, Teaching English as an Additional Language (TEAL), Well-being and Education, National SENCO Accreditation and PG Cert in Teacher Education.

The teaching team is drawn from Education, Health and Social Care, and includes experienced specialists such as local authority inspection and advisory teams. Group seminars with a tutor and other students take place in evenings and/or Saturdays, these sessions will ensure that you are provided with guidance and support to design, implement and write up your projects and assignments.
