About this course

Designed in consultation with industry, this professionally accredited Computer Science degree will equip you with the technical, problem-solving, and soft skills that the fast-moving digital economy demands.

Broadening options will allow you to hone your knowledge in specialist areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics, and the Internet of Things (IoT) to become highly employable across different sectors of the digital economy. As such, you can graduate with a named award in:

• BSc (Hons) Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence) • BSc (Hons) Computer Science (Robotics) • BSc (Hons) Computer Science (Internet of Things)

You’ll learn solid theoretical foundations and key concepts in computational thinking, computer architectures and their operating systems, machine learning, embedded systems and more. But Computer Science is a very practical field, and this course offers plenty of opportunities to gain hands-on project experience. You’ll be working in industry standard labs, engaging in practical exercises ranging from computer programming and software development to working with IoT devices and building and programming robotics units.

With extra opportunities to join our research centres and labs as an undergraduate intern, you’ll be able to gain experience of industry standards and best practices while working on cutting-edge technologies. Furthermore, industry experience can be obtained as part of your study by completing an optional sandwich year placement. Our students have been successful in obtaining placements in nationally competitive schemes which include Microsoft, HP, General Electric and the Met Office.

This degree has been accredited by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT. Accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by BCS. An accredited degree entitles you to professional membership of BCS, which is an important part of the criteria for achieving Chartered IT Professional (CITP) status through the Institute. Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to international accords.

We offer this programme with two study options. You can choose three years full-time or four years full-time which would include a one-year professional placement before your final year that will give you hands-on experience in a real-life working environment. This year in industry would give you the practical skills that many employers seek, giving you a competitive edge upon graduation.
