About this course
The degree has a strong focus on current important areas such as sustainability, resilience, and structural engineering, and on research strengths at UWL in climate change and building performance, materials, smart technology and computational modelling. The issue of design is addressed in combination with the principles of sustainability and the process of design, and includes design option development, interpretation of drawings and sketching. You will learn about safety legislation, safe working, method statements, risk assessment and management, as well as gaining site experience. You will develop an appreciation of the context of construction set against construction principles, socio-economic and demographic factors, commercial and safety issues, and a basic introduction to BIM and construction technology. Consideration of sustainability issues and their impact on civil engineering design is another important aspect of this course. In the first year of the course, you will be introduced to the fundamental and practical modules relating to civil engineering. Level 5 builds on the foundations laid down in the first year by looking to critically apply and analyse in a wider range of areas. At Level 6, you will be looking to synthesize your own ideas and critically evaluate your own working practices in a wide range of subjects. You will also undertake a year-long individual project which requires in-depth research study. In your final year you will be able to acquire a profound knowledge of civil engineering at the advanced level of theory, principles and application.
