About this course

Over the course of our biomedical science degree, you’ll gain an in-depth understanding of the biological principles that relate to the workings of the human body, as well as gaining an insight into the underlying biology of a wide range of health disorders and their treatments.

After gaining a solid grounding in the principles of biomedical science, you’ll move on to specialist topics, acquiring the in-depth understanding and advanced techniques vital for professional practice. That means you’ll study a range of areas, from cell and molecular biology, physiology and immunology, to microbiology and diagnostic and research techniques, to name but a few.

In your final year, you’ll get the chance to develop your own particular interests via a major project. With our excellent facilities, strong research focus and close links with local hospitals, by the time you graduate you’ll be ready for the next stage of your career.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS

  • The degree is professionally accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science up to 2024 student intake, with reaccreditation pending from 2025 onwards. This degree is also accredited by the Royal Society of Biology. These accreditations ensure students receive a wide-ranging, research informed scientific education and help to develop the practical skills and experience that employers value.

  • Our pioneering research in lifelong health and ageing, microbiology and vascular biology has led to important advances in diagnosis and care.

  • We are investing £115m to transform the way we teach and you learn in the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Our new Dalton building will enhance collaboration between students, staff and industry and provide new and improved teaching spaces, including a 200-student capacity Superlab.

  • We have high-specification teaching and research laboratories with specialist equipment, including blood biochemistry, a new microscopy suite and exercise performance laboratories.

  • BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science students may transfer to MBioMedSci Biomedical Science at the end of their second year, if they achieve a second-year average mark of at least 60%.

  • The full-time, four-year placement route provides the opportunity to go on a placement for at least 36 weeks, where you’ll get a taste of professional life in either a clinical or industrial setting.

  • The full-time, four-year BSc (Hons) Applied Biomedical Science placement route provides the opportunity to complete a 48-week placement in an Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) approved training laboratory and work towards completion of the IBMS Registration Portfolio.

  • You’ll have access to a range of self-paced learning resources, including interactive workbooks, virtual laboratories and support videos.

  • Our integrated technical skills units allow us and you to track your growing laboratory skills year by year, enabling you to demonstrate to future employers that you have the skills required to become a professional biomedical scientist.
