About this course

Learn about the ancient world and find ways to understand the foundations of how we live today. From Ancient Egypt to the rise of Islam in the Middle East. You can also learn what happened during the conquests of Alexander the Great and at the end of the Roman Empire.

Archaeology and Ancient History at Southampton offers you the opportunity to learn in an engaging, supportive and highly successful research environment. Graduates from the Ancient History and Archaeology BA degree have gained employment in heritage management, museums or archaeological research.

We are ranked 5th in the UK for Archaeology in the Complete University Guide, 2024.

You’ll have the chance to engage with topics you are already passionate about, or to try something entirely new. This might mean application of cutting-edge technology to discover and map new sites, or develop complimentary archival research skills.

You'll deepen your understanding of archaeology with at least 3 weeks of practical experience of field work, including excavating archaeological sites and collecting archaeological material from ploughed fields.

Our Digital Humanities facilities will allow you to study and research through cutting edge technology, such as virtual reality, 3D scanners and printers, and a 360 degree fully immersive audio-visual centre.
